It’s 8 hours by local bus, and nothing was easy for the first time find the way to this peaceful lake locates in the middle of Ba Be National park in Bac Kan province. There is Thuong Nga bus departure from My Dinh bus station, after 3 hours I was dropped off in Thai Nguyen city and I didnt not know when or who would pick up me for next departure so Just waited and waited. I had no idea there are 02 buses bring me to the lake so whatever buses took me, I went with them.
In fact, there are 02 sides of the lake those called ‘Bo Bac and Bo Nam’ (northern lakeside, and southern lakeside), I ended up with bus took me to Northern lakeside – located 3km to the boat station to cross the lake to reach all of homestays commune. Paid 30k vnd for xe om to get to the boat station. So ask for bus to ‘bo Nam’ (southern lakeside) for your coming trip then you do not have to deal with locals for xe om prices, and boat transfer etc. One of the xe om driver has homestay who offered free xe om and boat trasnfer if I book his homestay with $5/person/night so i totally went with it!
Welcome by his friendly parents at Thuan Thom homestay (01693468347) locates 300 m from boat station – lovely view over to the field and the lake. If visitors are type of prince and princess required well furnished with AC then please look for real hotels. Thuan Thom is real indeed homestay with basic stuff and friendly host. I did full day boat tour at $40 (boat tours are fixed prices by the national park department) so no matter which hotel/homestay you do, boat tours all have the same prices.
Full day boat tour has 03 main visits of cave (really impressed one in Vietnam as its natural beauty), waterfalls (was fine to see) then fairy pond & temple ( it was so so). What I paid for is the relaxing feeling handing on the boat around the lake whole day, you can swim in the lake as wanted but August was not a good month of clear water at the lake! 3 days 2 nights is kinda enough for this spot!
It’s worth it to make this trip as local way!
